Volunteer Centre West Berkshire
Newbury and Thatcham Handybus helps people who are unable to use public transport to get out on shopping trips and social outings of all kinds. It also runs regular daily, weekly and fortnightly shopping trips.
The fleet of four minibuses are driven by volunteers who are willing to give up some of their spare time, either regularly, or on an ad hoc basis, to contribute to those in the Newbury community who may be less mobile.
New volunteer drivers are always welcomed to join the team. Our drivers come from all walks of life and enjoy getting out and about doing a really worthwhile job.
The Volunteer Centre is in Broadway House at the Clocktower end of Northbrook Street.
Volunteer Centre West Berkshire is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, formed in 1974. Our well respected charity reached its 50th anniversary in 2024. The organisation's overriding ethos is to match local people to local need. We provide information, advice and guidance and personally match people to one of more than 300 volunteering opportunities in West Berkshire.
We also provide help and information to charitable organisations in West Berkshire, whether helping start a new charity or providing assistance with fundraising, training and governance. As well as run local schemes providing help for socially isolated and the elderly.
Our aims
- To promote volunteering opportunities to all members of the West Berkshire community irrespective of their age, gender, ethnicity, ability, race, sexuality or means.
- To work in partnership and harmony with any voluntary, charitable, community, statutory or business group for the benefit of West Berkshire people and the West Berkshire environment.
- To advocate the rights and responsibilities of volunteers.
- To accurately match the time and skills of people to the most appropriate opportunity for them.
- To continue to provide a Handybus, Shopmobility and Community Car service or other such services for people with mobility difficulties to residents of and visitors to Newbury.
- To continue to provide opportunities for the personal and professional development of staff and volunteers.
Volunteers must be 25+, have two years driving experience - and be prepared to undergo a short assessment (which we will arrange).
Ideal if you have empathy and understanding of the needs of the elderly and disabled - as well as good humour, patience and a friendly nature. You will need to be physically fit.
This is a flexible role available on various days/times.
