Gardening Volunteer

Bridge for Young People

The primary role of the Gardening volunteer is to look after the gardens and landscaped areas in and around Wessex House.  You may be working by yourself or with other volunteers to remove litter, clear away weeds and cut back vegetation or prune at appropriate times of the year.

What's involved?

The primary duty of all Gardening volunteers is to carry out tasks as agreed with the BfYP team to care for the garden area and ensure it looks well-kept all year round.

The following will apply to this role:

  • Outdoor work in most weathers
  • Manual labour including weeding, watering, planting, pruning and litter picking
  • Looking after the hand tools and keeping them in good condition
  • Keeping pathways clean and clear of debris
  • Keeping staff informed if there are any issues, eg any problems or concerns with the areas you are working on; sharps or hazardous waste found in these areas; other site issues

About Bridge for Young People

Young People and Children First, known as Bridge for Young People, provides a home and support to young people (aged 16-25) who are leaving care or who are homeless. We currently have three houses in West Berkshire; Wessex House, Rebecca House and Hope House.

Our residents have typically experienced varying challenges during their childhood. We provide them with a stable home, emotional support and practical help during this crucial time as they move into independence.

What skills do I need?

We'd like you to
  • Have some experience of gardening or horticulture, and use of hand tools or a willingness to learn
  • Have a reasonable level of fitness to work outdoors
  • Be willing to work outdoors
  • Have a friendly personality and enjoy meeting people
  • Be punctual to all shifts
  • Enjoy working as part of a team
  • Have good communication skills
  • Be reliable, patient, and keen to share your enthusiasm

When is this role available?

This is a flexible role available on various days/times.

Details

We are not expecting you to garden for a whole day, maybe up to 2 hours at any one time would be of great assistance. There maybe different hours needed throughout the seasons depending on what tasks are required.
