Support Volunteers

Newbury Samaritans

Support Volunteers play a vital role in helping Samaritans provide life-saving support to those in need. Unlike Listening Volunteers, Support Volunteers work behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of our branches and operations. From assisting with fundraising events and community outreach to handling administrative tasks and branch coordination, your contributions will directly impact our ability to maintain and expand our services.

As a Support Volunteer, you could organise local events, manage schedules, or help with practical tasks to maintain the branch. You'll also have the opportunity to promote Samaritans' work in the community through partnerships and awareness campaigns. No prior experience is required-just a willingness to learn and a commitment to supporting a service that makes a real difference in people's lives.

We are based at 58 West Street, Newbury, RG14 1BD. Two minutes from the Northbrook Street McDonalds, opposite the Lion Pub.

About Newbury Samaritans

As part of the national Samaritans organisation, Newbury Samaritans is dedicated to providing confidential emotional support to individuals experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those that may lead to suicide. Whether by telephone, chat, email, or our outreach programme, our trained volunteers offer a safe space for people to talk about their feelings and concerns, helping to alleviate emotional distress with the ultimate aim of reducing the incidence of suicide.

What skills do I need?

Successful attainment of a DBS as part of the training process is required, but as full training and support are given, no other specific qualifications are needed. We seek individuals who are empathetic, non-judgmental and possess good listening skills. Reliability and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality are essential.
