Volunteer Sea Cadet Instructor (Uniformed or Civilian)

Newbury Sea Cadets is currently looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join their team as Sea Cadet Instructors, working with young people aged 10-18.  

Newbury is a long-established Sea Cadet Unit that has provided life-changing opportunities for many young people. We currently have about 50 cadets who come from all over Newbury and the surrounding areas.

Whether you opt to be a uniformed leader, or wear your own clothes, you can be hands-on, teaching junior or senior cadets. You'll run lessons, activities, games, projects and events that help cadets progress through the Cadet Experience, gaining qualifications and confidence as they go.

About the Volunteer Instructor role:

The tasks of an Instructor include but are not restricted to the following:

• Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of Children and Young People for whom they are responsible.

• Delivering instruction and training to cadets of the Sea Cadets. 

• Attending Parade Nights (Mondays and/or Wednesdays) or being able to commit to a particular night each week or month.

Our immediate outcomes for young people within the Sea Cadets include improved life skills such as leadership, communication and citizenship, we also offer internally and externally accredited qualifications. Our long-term benefits for young people are far reaching - attendance and engagement in school, improved post 16 destinations, long-term wellbeing, reduced risky behaviour and increased participation in communities.

Newbury Sea Cadets is a long-established unit and we are looking to increase our volunteer numbers so that we can continue to have a positive impact on the young people within our community.

What skills do I need?

Whatever your experience and skills, they could be utilised to help young people flourish – catering, archery, meteorology, navigation, orienteering, first aid, engineering, photography, marketing, football coaching, IT, social media, finance, driving - there is no limit. Whatever your interest, you could bring it to Newbury Sea Cadets.

You could also share your skills out on the water with the next generation, through the opportunity to teach water sports such as kayaking, sailing, powerboating, canoeing, rowing and windsurfing. If you don’t have any water sport qualifications, we’ll provide you with all the equipment, training and the opportunity to gain national qualifications with the Royal Yachting Association for example. All you need is lots of enthusiasm!

Details

Our Sea Cadet Instructors dedicate on average roughly 2-3 hours per week to the role but you can give as much time to this role as you are able. Attendance would be required at weekly parade nights (Mondays and/or Wednesdays) or the ability to commit to one night per week or month. We sometimes have additional cadet training days at the weekends if this is something you are able to join from time to time.
