Volunteer Sea Cadet Trustee

Do you have trustee or governance experience or want the opportunity to gain some? Do you have a passion for improving the lives of young people in your community?

If you said yes, then becoming a Trustee with Newbury Sea Cadets could be for you!

Newbury Unit are currently looking for enthusiastic and dedicated trustees to join its Unit Management Team (UMT). 

The tasks of a trustee include but are not limited to the following: 

• Support the UMT Chair to manage a safe, effective, and successful sea cadet unit.

• Support the UMT in ensuring all unit activities and matters comply with appropriate regulations and Marine Society and Sea Cadet (MSSC) policies.

• Support the unit’s fundraising efforts.

• Ensure that all young people and instructors at the unit are engaged in fun and safe activities.

• Attend a regular UMT meeting – usually one hour, monthly or bi-monthly.

The aim of Sea Cadets is to give young people aged 10 to 18 the best possible head start in life through nautical adventure and fun, based on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy.

Our volunteers work, both directly with young people and behind the scenes, to help make a positive difference to teenagers who are often struggling in today’s world and their communities.

Our immediate outcomes for young people within the Sea Cadets include improved life skills such as leadership, communication and citizenship, we also offer internally and externally accredited qualifications. Our long-term benefits for young people are far reaching - attendance and engagement in school, improved post 16 destinations, long-term wellbeing, reduced risky behaviour and increased participation in communities.

Newbury Sea Cadets is a long-established unit and we are looking to increase our volunteer numbers so that we can continue to have a positive impact on the young people within our community.

Details

Most of the tasks of a Sea Cadet Trustee can be completed remotely and you can dedicate as much time to this role as you are able. You may need to consult with the rest of the Newbury Sea Cadet Unit team when they are on parade nights on Monday and/or Wednesday evenings, but you would not be expected to regularly attend the unit on those nights. Unit Management Team members do need to attend a regular UMT meeting – usually one hour, monthly or bi-monthly, on a weekday evening.
