Thatcham Volunteer Bureau
Busy Thatcham Volunteer Bureau provides a community car scheme and chairman vehicle. They are always keen to meet local people who would like to consider becoming a volunteer car drivers. Volunteers enjoy a real sense of community and their work is much valued by their clients who are usually elderly and infirm and who are unable to use public transport.
How much time must I give?
The choice is up to you. We do not expect a regular commitment. The office will contact you regarding a potential job - it will be your choice to do it or not.
Who pays for my petrol?
We offer a mileage allowance so that you are not out of pocket.
What about my insurance?
Your insurance company should be notified that you are volunteer driving, but not for gain or reward. In nearly all cases they do not charge any additional premium for voluntary work.
What type of journeys can I be expected to do?
Journeys can be long or short; it depends on the type of driving that you like to do. The choice is yours.
We operate a community transport scheme organising lifts among our volunteer drivers for medical, social and shopping purposes. We ask for a contribution from our passengers to help cover our costs. People generally phone the office with details of what they need, and the office staff contact the drivers to arrange transport. Most drivers drive their own vehicles, some also drive the Bureau's Chairman Car, which is specially adapted to take a wheelchair and occupant if necessary. Drivers are paid mileage rates set by Government and can claim other reasonable expenses. Everyone connected with the Bureau is a volunteer. There are also some fundraising events, this year the Thatcham Fun Day raffle and the Christmas Lights burger stall, and there other jobs generally involving paperwork, such as statistical returns and reports and claiming grants where available, which are shared around as much as possible.
Full clean driving licence is required (minor offences accepted) you need to be an outgoing happy person who is happy to chat to people and above all enjoy being out and about. You only need commit to what you want to do.
This is a flexible role available on various days/times.
