Trustees and Directors

GCCT is a registered charity and in 2018 opened a visitor centre and café near Newbury in Greenham Common's restored 1950's grade II listed airfield control tower. In it we provide a window into Greenham Common's past, and a centre for enjoying its present now that the common is again a public space shared with nature. The area has a long history, including most notably as a hub of airborne activity in WW2 and the Cold War, and as site of peace protest during some of this period.

In our first few years we have established good visitor numbers, a heritage collection and a committed volunteer-base who advance our education and community goals through permanent and special exhibitions, events, and other educational outreach. We aim to have a strong community connection in our café and spaces, and we grow awareness of Greenham Common's national and international historical importance.

We are seeking 2 or 3 new Trustees and Directors to strengthen our existing team, particularly to aid engagement with younger audiences, fundraising, museum operations and volunteer/HR. We want to be diverse and we encourage applicants of all ages and experiences.

These are unpaid positions and require attendance at one evening meeting (6:30-8:00pm) per month at the Control Tower, and some hours in between meetings to act on decisions. As we continue to grow it will particularly important that our Directors and Trustees are adaptable and are able to inspire our volunteers.

Directions:

From Newbury town centre take Greenham Road to Burys Bank Road and turn left at the roundabout. Turn right at the next roundabout into the car park and you will see the tower in front of you.

From Thatcham and the east access Burys Bank Road from Crookham Hill and follow the road to the roundabout to turn left into the car park as above.

About Greenham Common Control Tower

Greenham Control Tower opened its doors in Summer 2018 as a visitor centre and community hub, with the aim to preserve and share the historical legacy of one of the few remaining airfield buildings. It now shares the story of Greenham Common whilst supporting and cooperating with local organisations for the benefit of the whole community.

There is a Café, Cold War exhibition, temporary exhibition room and an observation deck with extensive views over the local area.

There are 4 themes we are particularly focusing on:
* the military and Cold War history of the Common
* the social history of the Common
* the role of protest in society
* nature conservation and wildlife

The control tower offers space to enjoy the common from a fascinating and dynamic location with a range of activities and facilities aimed at all ages to educate, inform and entertain where you can reach for the skies from the comfort of the ground.

What skills do I need?

Whilst relevant experience is advantageous it is most important that you are resourceful and enthusiastic about our mission and values.

We welcome applications from fast learners for whom this may be their first such position. What we need is for candidates to bring ideas, energy and action to the role. We hope that if you join us you will find a committed, approachable and collaborative board.
