Tower Guide

• Providing a friendly and informed welcome to all visitors
• Helping visitors to discover more about the control tower and its historical collections and displays by providing guided tours of the building, giving short talks, answering questions and selling guide books and pamphlets.
• Helping to ensure security procedures are followed to help prevent theft and damage.
• Getting to know health and safety and procedures including evacuation procedures and incident/accident reporting
• Being aware of provisions for visitors with disabilities or reduced mobility
• Attending training and workshop sessions relevant to the building guide role
• Learning and sharing ideas with other volunteers, particularly other building guides
• Developing your knowledge of the history and role of the control tower, the former air base and of Greenham Common as a whole.

Directions:

From Newbury town centre take Greenham Road to Burys Bank Road and turn left at the roundabout. Turn right at the next roundabout into the car park and you will see the tower in front of you.

From Thatcham and the east access Burys Bank Road from Crookham Hill and follow the road to the roundabout to turn left into the car park as above.

About Greenham Common Control Tower

Greenham Control Tower opened its doors in Summer 2018 as a visitor centre and community hub, with the aim to preserve and share the historical legacy of one of the few remaining airfield buildings. It now shares the story of Greenham Common whilst supporting and cooperating with local organisations for the benefit of the whole community.

There is a Café, Cold War exhibition, temporary exhibition room and an observation deck with extensive views over the local area.

There are 4 themes we are particularly focusing on:
* the military and Cold War history of the Common
* the social history of the Common
* the role of protest in society
* nature conservation and wildlife

The control tower offers space to enjoy the common from a fascinating and dynamic location with a range of activities and facilities aimed at all ages to educate, inform and entertain where you can reach for the skies from the comfort of the ground.

Details

Time commitment: We have no minimum or maximum commitment and will be as flexible as possible in the context of our opening hours. The Tower is open every weekend and Tuesday to Friday through the week with occasional evening events.
