Volunteer Reader to work with primary school children

Schoolreaders

Schoolreaders is a national children's literacy charity that recruits volunteers to go into local primary schools to listen to children read.

Schoolreaders find and match volunteers with local primary schools to support children in improving their reading and comprehension skills, as well as developing their confidence and social skills. Our service to schools is totally free!

Volunteers visit their matched school once a week for an hour or two during the school day where they work individually with children to help improve their reading ability and also their enjoyment of reading. Research shows that fewer and fewer children are reading for pleasure so volunteers spending 1:1 time with children to enjoy books together is invaluable. Often our volunteers read with children who need extra support or who do not have anyone to read to outside of their classroom.

Our volunteers tell us their visits to schools are often the highlight of their week. Indeed, lots of volunteers become invaluable members of the school community itself.

Volunteers need to be 18 or over, have a good level of written and spoken English and enjoy spending time with children.

Our volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of one hour each week for a full year during term time (although holidays can of course be taken) and will undergo an Enhanced DBS check, which is organised and paid for by the school.

If you would like to find out more about Schoolreaders visit our website at www.schoolreaders.org.

We look forward to hearing from you.

About Schoolreaders

Schoolreaders finds volunteers and matches them to primary schools where they give free one-to-one reading sessions. Our aim is to make sure that every child can read well by the time they move to secondary school at the age of 11.

What skills do I need?

If you have some time to spare, a good level of spoken and written English, and if you enjoy spending time with children, you could become a Schoolreader. We do not ask for any particular educational qualifications. Our volunteers are drawn from all walks of life, and range in age from 18 to 92. Our volunteers get enormous pleasure from seeing the difference that a few hours of their time can make to a child's reading ability, confidence and enjoyment.

Volunteers need to be 18 or over, must be able to commit to visiting their matched school at the same time each week for a minimum of one year, and will undergo an enhanced DBS check organised by their matched school.
