Newbury Cancer Care
Our Charity provides a transport service comprising a team of volunteer drivers co-ordinated by a transport co-ordinator who are interested in helping make the lives of cancer patients and their families less stressful.
Our drivers take the patients to various hospital appointments in the south of England, such as Newbury, Reading, Oxford, London, Basingstoke, Guildford, Bracknell and Southampton for their cancer treatment. We pay a tax-free mileage allowance and a subsistence allowance in certain circumstances. Whatever time you can give is welcome.
Newbury Cancer Care (NCC) is a small, local cancer charity which was founded in 1984 and supports cancer patients and their families in the West Berkshire area. In its early years it pioneered palliative care services and although its major focus is cancer, it can occasionally offer help to people with other life limiting conditions.
It provides financial grants, counselling and complementary therapies for cancer patients. One of its major services is a transport service specifically for cancer patients, taking them to and from their hospital appointments in the south of England with the help of a team of volunteer drivers. It usually provides around 1,000 round trips a year and has a team of 27 volunteers.
NCC has two part time staff: a Director of Operations and a Transport Coordinator.
Newbury Cancer Care was instrumental in the setting up of the 4 Rainbow Rooms at West Berkshire Community Hospital (WBCH), which care for patients and their families at end of life and provides money to maintain them to a very high standard and in the last couple of years its major focus has been as one of the parent charities for the Rosemary Appeal which raised £5.5m to build the Greenham Wing at WBCH, which includes The Rosemary Centre from which NCC provides many of its services. NCC provides a major grant each year to Sue Ryder charity whose Palliative Hub operates from The Rosemary Centre.
We are looking for volunteers with a clean driving licence, a sympathetic ear and patience, as sometimes there can be a lot of waiting involved.
