The Old Bluecoat School is a 700 year old Grade 1 Listed building in Thatcham. oldbluecoatschool.org.uk.

The OBS Charity's responsibilities are to maintain the building and provide it for the benefit of the Local Community. We hire the building out on an hourly basis to local groups.

There are six Trustees, who meet once every two months to discuss and manage the Charities objectives. The meetings are typically quite relaxed, although are necessary to underpin the formal governance of the Charity.

Trustees work from home and also come together to discuss OBS business at periodic meetings as required. The time commitment is probably only a couple of hours per month.

It is possible to join the Committee without becoming a full Trustee.

About The Old Bluecoat School

The Old Bluecoat School is a well-known building in Thatcham alongside the A4 road near Francis Baily School. The building is believed to be over 700 years old; it is Grade 1 Listed and is of national importance. The Bluecoat School ran from 1794 to 1914 after which the building was used by Berkshire County Council as additional teaching space for Francis Baily and Kennet Schools.

Now owned by Thatcham Town Council the building was leased to a new Charity in 2005 which restored the building to make it available for local community use. We hire the building to local organisations on an hourly basis for a wide range of activities such as: play groups, exercise classes and musical events.

We have no regular external funding and rely on the income from Hirers to cover our costs of running and maintaining the building.

What skills do I need?

An interest in managing a building for local community use.

A sympathy for buildings of historical interest.

Previous experience in managing a similar facility would be useful, but is not essential.

Experience of of Social Media, Publicity, Fundraising, are always needed.
