Friends of Newtown Road Cemetery
The Committee of The Friends meets bi-monthly to plan events and keep up to date with work ongoing in the Cemetery. The Secretary is required to minute the Committee meetings and send the minutes and agendas for meetings to the members. To arrange with the Town Council for the use of the Cemetery Chapel for Friends events.
The Secretary would work from their home and at the location of the Committee meeting (usually in a committee member’s home or in the Cemetery Chapel in Newtown Road).
Friends of Newtown Road Cemetery exists to research the people buried in the 12,000+ graves in the Cemetery. It also promotes the flora and fauna in the Cemetery which is entirely natural and hosts moths, bats, bees, etc. plus a large variety of wild flowers and grasses.
The Friends host Welcome Days at least 4/5 times a year at Remembrance in November, in April for Spring Flowers, Midsummer for moth release and bat talks. There is a regular programme of recording the inscriptions on the monuments and researching the people buried therein. This information is then published on our website.
We work in close co-operation with Newbury Town Council who own the Cemetery.
Use of a computer and familiarity with e-mail and on-line work.
This is a flexible role available on various days/times.
The time commitment varies but is not a ‘regular’ weekly or otherwise. The Committee meetings are during the day and also we would need the Secretary to be free to help with setting up Welcome Days etc so not suitable for someone working full time.
